So, things have been pretty quiet here on the ol’ blog lately. The biggest reason is that I found a little something to occupy my time while I’m here in Mississippi.
What is it?
Well, I can get called anytime and have to be ready to go where I’m needed. I step into the situation with very little intel. I have to be ready to face anything that’s thrown at me. I have to stay calm, gain control of the situation, and show that I have the power to do what I say.
No, I’m not a hostage negotiator.
I’m our county’s newest substitute teacher.
I recently read a statistic that said kids in school spend about one year’s worth of their education with substitute teachers. It was a rather sobering thought.
On a Friday, I was cleared to receive my badge. That evening, I got my first job for the following Thursday. I was relieved to have plenty of time to get ready. Well, that weekend was a holiday weekend. Late Monday night, I got a text asking me to sub the following day.
“WAIT! I’M NOT READY FOR THIS! HELP!” I thought.
I did not sleep well during the remaining hours of the night.
Of course, I can’t tell you what happened that day (confidentiality rules, you know). But I bravely grabbed my 8,000 pound sub bag and my lunch and headed out the door.
At the end of the day, I felt like this:
Mwahahaha! I did it!
There is nothing like going into a completely terrifying situation and coming out relatively unscathed on the other side. It is quite the rush.
I’ve taught 10 days now and have learned SO much! Seeing a student’s face light up is one of my favorite things. It’s also fun to share little tidbits about Japan here and there.
And now, the 64 degree sunny day is calling me. See you around!

Congratulations on surviving being a substitute teacher. Let me tell you, if you can do that, my dear you can do anything!
Hugs,
