Winter tends to be pretty cloudy in Wakkanai. But winter is my favorite time to look at Rishiri. There is just something about seeing the mountain covered in snow that just awes me every time. Oh, who am I kidding? I love looking at that mountain all the time.
I had an overnight visit to Rebun this past week. I went on Tuesday and came back Wednesday night. On Tuesday night, I stayed in the ever-lovely Pension Uni. My room even had a view of Rishiri. I’m so spoiled. I acknowledge this fact.
Anyway, on Wednesday morning, I woke up early and peeked out the window. This is what I saw:
Well, hello!
I wanted to get out there for the gorgeous view, so I tumbled into my school clothes (or most of them) and blazed out the door. I was determinedly trucking towards the best viewpoint that I knew of, when I heard “Liz!” from behind me. I turned around and was surprised to see the German visitor I had met from the day before.
We walked to the cliff edge for a few minutes:
And then we hiked up the ski hill a little ways. The sun rose behind a bank of clouds, but it managed to burn a hole through them. Looked pretty cool! I couldn’t stop taking pictures.
Then, a local photographer came by with his adorable dog.
Look at that face! Even the dog, whose name means “Handsome Man,” enjoyed the morning.
After a while, we all went our separate ways.
It was an amazing morning.
